New book on the horizon... and some GREAT NEWS that created HAVOC in my life!

I'm writing a book about memory management. The title will be "Delphi memory management for classic and ARC compilers".

You can read more about it at: http://sites.fastspring.com/epixeditions/product/delphimm

I already have a few chapters in rough draft and my plan is to finish the book by the end of September.

So far so good, but...

GREAT news struck my family like lightning! One that will force us to switch into high gear!

My son won the Outstanding Scholarship for the Rochester Institute of Technology course in IT/Web and Mobile tech!

Yaaay! :)

But... The Scholarship covers only half of the tuition cost!

I don't have to spell it out to you... but we're kinda short on cash, so...

Anyone here interested in preordering the book?

It'll be a deal too!

While the regular price will be $37.50, you can preorder it at only $27.50 until June 30!

You'll get a great ebook about memory management!

I promise! :)

Cross my heart! :)

I expect to release it by September 30.

Just go to http://sites.fastspring.com/epixeditions/product/delphimm

Oh, and please share! Thanks :)

Nah, he already eradicated ARC from his mobile System.pas.

Congratulations! I attended Rochester Institute of Technology for two years myself. If I were to describe the campus, it would be like this.... Imagine all of the posts Rudy has ever made. Now imagine all of those posts were bricks. :-) The legend on campus is that RIT holds the world record for largest number of bricks in one place. It can also be cold and snowy naturally.

But it's a fine school where students are challenged. I think they've gone to a semester system now in lieu of the quarter system when I was there, which I believe is a good idea. Somehow I doubt that courses are still taught in Modula-2 however. ;-)

Thanks!

Fortunately, he will be attending classes in Zagreb, Croatia. http://www.croatia.rit.edu/

It is much warmer here :)

WOW. That's certainly new since I went to RIT! In that case I guess I can say what I really wanted to say... "When I was in Rochester I ONCE WENT AN ENTIRE WEEK WITHOUT SEEING THE SUN AND IT SNOWED FOR FIVE STRAIGHT DAYS." ;-)

I posted your book announcement up on Reddit to get it some more exposure. For the record, I now hope I'm wrong and that there are indeed three million users of Delphi and they all buy your book. Or if Bruce McGee just wants to buy 3 million copies to make me look wrong, that's ok too. :-)

Joseph,

When I first read that my mind replaced the "b" in bricks with a "p".

Thanks for writing the book, too. It's a complicated issue, with much,
mainly erroneous, information floating around. I'm in for the preorder!

Only if it is written like "Turbo Pascal, The Complete Reference" by
Stephen O'Brien. I bought those books since for version 4 (then 5.5, 6
and 7) and I have not seen anything like that book for Delphi. After
that I bought Delphi 1 because Turbo/Borland Pascal users were given
special discount. IT came with a big pack of printed manuals and they
were very good as well. Now we don't get anything like that. Why has
Embarcadero stopped producing pdf files of its manuals? Can we start a
campaign to make them release them?

Stephen O'Brien had great books and I seriously miss old reference manuals, too.

So it seems I will have to pull some old books out of the closet to remind myself
how they were written :)

Me too. At least I finally cleared out the shelf of Turbo Pascal
books, but kept the TurboPower documentation. I still prefer paper
books for developer tool documentation. Makes it easier to browse for
new stuff that I could use but didn't know was there.

Dunno. References are much more searchable if they are in electronic
form. And they don't get dirty or ugly corners, and they stay open on
the page you want to read. <g>

Exactly! For searching, electronic wins the day. But for browsing and
discovering new stuff, I like being able to turn the physical pages,
turn down the corners, put colored flags on frequently used pages, etc.
And dropping a calculator on the opened book usually keeps it open,
unless it flings the calculator across the desk. :-)

You might be surprised.

I make a point of noting new Delphi books, and there have been a bunch over the past few years. Some free, some commercial.

I assume someone is buying them since some of the authors have released more than one book in that time.

Yes, I'm waiting on delivery of it.
I'm curious about its contents.
I hope he deals with FMX in detail, because that's missing. About
language several books have been released over the recent years.

FMX is black hole of Delphi development. You can never have enough
books for it. On the other hand, FMX books can become obsolete
rather fast ;-)

Would you surrender some details beforehand about how knowledge of

Well, there are certain coding patterns that can help you keep your references
in order and with that you can avoid memory leaks, crashes...

Now, I sound like Rudy ;-)

There is also whole range of "fragile code" - code that works when you write it,
but further changes in unrelated sections of code may break that working code.

I will also cover those and explain (with examples) what kind of code falls into that
category and why it is easy to break.

And then there is ARC. Even using interfaces and object references in classic
compiler is often source of unintentional errors and leaks, but full ARC compilers
add another level of complexity, and plenty of hidden pitfalls.

Leak check and cycle detection tools are a bit tricky as they can fail and/or
give fake results. And at the end you have to suspect some code first in order
to confirm there is a problem.

So, while I would like to say yes to your question, answer may depend on
thorough testing of those I still have to complete before getting the whole picture.

Greetings and good luck with it

It is hard to predict how much time I would need to complete the above and
I am not sure whether I could finish covering tools for September release.
However, if this happens, I'll release an update in form of second release by the end
of the year, free for all first release owners.

A little update!

I must say that I'm surprised by the level of support I got here!

Clearly a $10 discount isn't really a huge incentive for anyone here to preorder my ebook, so I guess most of you really stepped in to offer a helping hand to friend in distress! :)

This little - sort of - campaign, will likely fill the gap and cover significant portion of my immediate cashflow needs just in time!

Thanks again everyone! :)

I must say that I'm surprised by the level of support I got here!

Clearly a $10 discount isn't really a huge incentive for anyone here
to preorder my ebook, so I guess most of you really stepped in to
offer a helping hand to friend in distress! :)

This little - sort of - campaign, will likely fill the gap and cover
significant portion of my immediate cashflow needs just in time!

Thanks again everyone! :)

This is great!

Congratulations and I'm already on preorder

I wish you also released a hard copy of the book :)

I'm writing a book about memory management. The title will be "Delphi memory management for classic and ARC compilers".

There will be a hard copy, and there will be a significant discount

at the moment.

As we're getting closer to the release date, I have created a new private G+ community
where we can already discuss the book's content.

The first thing I'm going to publish there is the Table of Contents.
There may still be enough time to add some chapters, so feel free
to make a suggestion if you feel something is missing.

Obviously, I may not be able to accommodate all the requests, at least
not for the first edition. But hey, there's a reason why it's called
"the first edition". There's always room for improvements, second editions or updates :)

Anyway, I plan to send a personal invite to everyone who has ordered
the book so far, and everyone ordering it from now on, but you're welcome to ask to join already.

You can ask to join here https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/117407853275620795387

But please remember, it's a PRIVATE group exclusively for the owners of the book.
Umm... if you still haven't, you can order here:

http://sites.fastspring.com/epixeditions/product/delphimm

Preordering terms still apply.

Thanks again everyone for preordering the book!

I posted the Table of Contents in the eBook owners' private Community already,
but I guess it doesn't hurt if I post it here too.

Your comments are welcome, though I may not be able to reply as promptly as I'd like.
I'm extremely busy these days, trying to meet the promised deadline!

If you have already ordered the eBook and really wish to contribute, to be sure your
voice is heard, join the Community and post your comments there.

You should have received the invitation via email already. If you haven't noticed it, check
your mailboxes and spam folder too. The original invitation with the direct private link
should be waiting there.

Looks good on a first look, you might want to add this information from
a recent thread in this very group here:

"Would you run the same test again but using FastMM 4992 (Latest
version) with UseReleaseStack option?

You will have to add {$define UseReleaseStack} manually in
FastMM4Options.inc file since its not there

Just make sure you use version 4992 with Release Stack."

Seems to be that one can optimize for better performance in multi
threading situations. Oh, now as I wrote this I have some question
regarding the book: does it describe memory management in the light of
multi threaded programming as well? How to secure access to shared
objects (e.g. critical section) etc.

Multithreading and optimizing and substituting memory managers
are beyond scope of my book.

Multithreading would require separate book. Actually, there is one
that covers OmnitThread library, but also multithreading concepts as
such: https://leanpub.com/omnithreadlibrary

Focus of my book is what happens in context of Delphi code.
Multithreading does not change mechanics of memory management
it is just matter of protecting variables - and knowing where and how.

I am mentioning multithreading in few places, but more in line of
what kind of code is not safe to use - for instance common mistake
is thinking that FreeAndNil is safe, but it is not.

Hello,

it's clear that you can't describe the fundamentals etc. of
Multithreading, but you mention "what kind of code is not safe to use"
that is what I was after. Without that a book on memory management
wouldn't be complete in my eyes.

Okay... The D-Day is getting seriously close!

Just about three weeks until the release date! :)

Here's a little, sort of, off-topic, but not really, question for you.

1. Check out the background image used for our private group.

https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/117407853275620795387

2. Can you guess where this was taken?

The first one with the correct answer will get the eBook for FREEEE! :)

No.

It is The Temple of Venus / Roman Villa in the Bay of Verige, Brijuni Islands, Croatia as

He who waits... Wastes a lot of time!

Well, that may be so... But not in this case! :)

The long awaited eBOOK: "Delphi Memory Management For Classic And ARC Compilers" has
been released as promised on September 30, 2017!

It's the first public release that we call "Edition - 0". It may require some more proofing and
we'll work on the formatting a bit more in the coming days, but the content is there!

You have only a few more days to take a $5 discount! Once we really upload the "Edition - 1"
(which is almost a matter of hours) we'll silently turn this offer off :)

So, hurry...

http://sites.fastspring.com/epixeditions/product/delphimm

And please share :)
