Yesterday, my XE2 IDE was working fine. Today, whenever I start it up, it
freezes for a minute, then displays the following popup error:

Message from webpage
displayNotification: Out of stack space

If I don't dismiss the popup, the IDE then crashes and terminates.

Has anyone ever seen this error before? I have a feeling that maybe Embarcadero
did something to the Welcome page last night (yes, I know, I should disable
it) that is now crashing the IDE. And indeed, if I disable the Welcome page,
the error does go away.

Adware???

Try to remove adware with ExterminateItSetup.exe, works for me. http://www.curiolab.net/
Other wise hopefully y keep your register keys with regards to borland and embarcadero .
Hope this help,
I don't have XE2, somebody should be able to assist with the keys.

Recently I haven't been able to launch either Delphi 2010 or Delphi XE7, with the same symptoms.

The scary part is that even you, Remy Lebeau, report the same problem! Remy, your answers have saved the day any number of times! Yikes, what to do now? :)

Did you disable the Welcome page, like I did?

And indeed, if I disable the Welcome page, the error does go away.

I just now re-enabled the Welccome page in my XE2, and the error is not happening
anymore, so maybe the webpage has been fixed? I'll have to keep on eye on
it.

I am not able to launch either 2010 or XE7 today (May 2, 2017).

> Did you disable the Welcome page, like I did?

How do I do that? What is the easiest/safest way?

Doing a search, I see some suggestions involve editing the registry. A common suggestion involves going to a key such as:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Embarcadero\BDS\15.0
and I gather that the "15.0" at the end refers to XE7.

On my PC under Win 7, I have ONLY THESE two entries in under "BDS":
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Embarcadero\BDS\15.0
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Embarcadero\BDS\18.0

If that "15.0" is for mucking with XE7, all is well with that. But how do I disable the welcome screen for 2010? (The same reference that told me "15.0" is XE7 also tells me "7" should be the number for 2010, but I don't see a registry key for "7" or "7.0".)

THANK YOU!

Long day, sigh!

How do I do that? What is the easiest/safest way?

Go into the following Registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Embarcadero\BDS\<product version>\Known IDE Packages

Find the entry for "$(BDS)\Bin\startpageide<package version>.bpl" and rename
it to put an underscope in front of the filename, eg: "$(BDS)\Bin\_startpageide160.bpl".

Now restart the IDE.

Doing a search, I see some suggestions involve editing the registry.

Yes.

A common suggestion involves going to a key such as:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Embarcadero\BDS\15.0
and I gather that the "15.0" at the end refers to XE7.

Yes. See:

http://wiki.delphidabbler.com/index.php/Notes/VersionNumbers

http://docwiki.embarcadero.com/RADStudio/en/Compiler_Versions

15.0 is XE7 (package version 210).

On my PC under Win 7, I have ONLY THESE two entries in under "BDS":

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Embarcadero\BDS\15.0
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Embarcadero\BDS\18.0

18.0 is 10.1 Berlin.

But how do I disable the welcome screen for 2010? (The same
reference that told me "15.0" is XE7 also tells me "7" should be
the number for 2010, but I don't see a registry key for "7" or "7.0").

Yes, 2010 is BDS 7.0. If you don't have the Registry key for it, then it
is not installed.

Just in case someone else encounters this in the future:
The entry for the beloved Delphi 7 is under "CodeGear" rather than "Embarcadero":
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\CodeGear\BDS\7.0\Known IDE Packages
