Now that the forum is up at long last, why is not the News Server operational?
It seems like an eternity since it was last working or at least a week...
Is this a sign-off for Embarcadero????

It doesn't work here. Haven't changed any settings. This is posted using the web interface.

I get an error when trying to connect:
"Error reported by winsock driver: Connection refused by server (Error 10061)"
I have not changed my login credentials and this is exactly the behaviour I have had during earlier outages.
Then I wait until my alert email messages start arriving at which time NNTP has been working again.
Not so this time, it is not working right now.

Is there some server side filter that blocks IP addresses outside the USA?

That usually means you are trying to connect to an IP/port that is not listening,
or has too many pending connections, or is being blocked by a firewall.

I am connecting to forums.embarcadero.com on port 563 (with SSL enabled)
and it works fine.

I am using Forte Free Agent (an old newsreader) and I have tried setting the NNTP port to 563 (it was 119) but that did not change the error message at all.
Note that I have used the exact same setting for many years and it was working to read your reply Aug 14 in the thread "Missing nodes or items in TTreeView".
I also have a reply to another thread by Peter Below on Aug 15.
But since then I have not managed to connect using my newsreader and there has been no mail messages either for a long time even though I have enabled subscriptions on several subforums. I use the arrival of these emails as alert to update my newsreader cache of messages...
Looking at these email alerts I get the following statistics for posts in the forums:
Aug 10: 9 posts
Aug 11: 2 posts
Aug 12: 5 posts
Aug 13: 6 posts
Aug 14: 6 posts
Aug 15: 3 posts
Aug 17: nothing....
Aug 18: 1 post
Aug 19-23: Total silence...
Aug 24: 11 posts so far (not counting mine)

Earlier there has been outages as well, for example Aug 1-2, July 30, July 25-27, and so on, usually for a day or two (weekends).
When the email messages start arriving I can connect by NNTP, but not this time...
I don't really think it is my news reader using the wrong port....

Since I access private newsgroups, SSL is required. This is stated in the
documentation:

Using the Embarcadero discussion forums
http://edn.embarcadero.com/article/38435

Which is linked to on the opening webpage at https://forums.embarcadero.com.

It says SSL is optional for the public newsgroups. But I would not rely
on that. You should use SSL if you are logging in with your EDN credentials.

I turned on SSL in XanaNews (port 563) and now it's working again. Thanks!

I guess that means that XanaNews knows that SSL must be used if port 563 is specified?
It is a pity if I have to switch newsreader since I will lose all of the history amassed so far... :(

I googled XanaNews and found one link on github where it was stated that it is actually written in Delphi!
So do you compile it yourself?

In another link Google supplied (to softronic.com) there was a download page but Firefox plugin uBlock showed a "banned" page when I tried to go there....
I could override it, but is there a risk in using the binary download?
From Github I got the full sources (apparently) and with a project file for XE5, so maybe I should just go ahead and build it myself?
Is that what you did?
The VERSION.txt file in the top folder says 1.20.0.0. Is that what you have?

Well, I tried it but it did not compile. Complained about:
D:\Internet\Download\Newsreaders\XanaNews\xananews-master\source\NewsGlobals.pas(78,15): error F1026: F1026 File not found: 'version.inc'

And sure enough, there is no such file in the download from github.

Thanks!

After I have found the XanaNews download (release) with the help of a
thread in non-technical I have now installed XanaNews 1.19.1.372 and
this is my first hit at using it.
It is a bit "different" than my old Free Agent reader but it did at
least connect and managed to download the messages for Delphi IDE and
now I am further on getting news working again.

Thanks Remy for pointing me to the news documentation pages!
Thanks Carl-Henrik for getting my eyes on XanaNews!

A question regarding XanaNews:
Handling online tasks

I tried to get hold of the thread in non-technical where XanaNews is
discussed (https://forums.embarcadero.com//thread.jspa?threadID=115638)
but when I used the Get Messages function on that group it got 14
messages and stopped with the status bar saying there are over 100.000
messages left to download.
How can I "stop online tasks" as it is called in Free Agent and make a
more precise request? I really don't need 100.000 old messages in this
group....

Well, I'm no expert on XanaNews, but if you right click on a group the Get Messages dialog pops up.
In that dialog it's possible to specify the number of messages to download.
I always have the 'Get Headers Only' checkbox ticked when I check for new messages.
That makes it possible to later only download message bodies that are of interest.
That is done from the right click menu of the right hand pane.

There's a newsgroup dedicated to XanaNews at the geldenhuys.co.uk server by the way.

I just found that if the thread is collapsed in the thread pane then
new posts to that same thread do not change the thread title looks.
This makes it harder finding unread replies.

Is there some setting that enables making the thread main title bold if
there are new posts inside?

I looked there and could adjust some other annoying things, but could
you please be a bit more specific regarding making a thread being
marked bold if it (collapsed) contains new posts?
I simply have not been able to make thta work.

Hmmm,...

There is only one Show Unread Messages: Bold check-box in Options->
Messages.

That's what I have checked.

And I have too...

I received a notification of your reply by email so I knew that it was
here, but after getting all the messages I could not find it by
scrolling in the messages view, because the thread was collapsed and
the boldness only affects the individual (now invisible) post.
So I had to go to the top of the list and select one message there,
then use the spacebar to move on until I found the message you wrote.
Not very user friendly, in my view...

I opened a new thread over at the XanaNews.talk newsgroup on this very
topic. Hopefully the developer will respond.

No Bo, not in the way as Forte and OE, but
I have set Tools - Options - Hide Folder Icons to false (unticked)
This has the effect that a threads first message folder icon changes color if there are unread
messages down the line and this helps spot unread messages.
A thread with unread messages is yellowish and a thread with no unread messages is gray.

Boy, that made it suddenly readable!

No problem, Q!
Nothing to be upset about ;) It's just me and my sentence formulation that gets it wrong ever so
often. I was of course still talking about the folder icons I mentioned in the previous sentence.

Here's a correction:

For a thread with unread messages, it is yellowish, and for a thread with no unread messages it is
gray.

Cheers

Well,
I can only say that after installing XanaNews today (now using 1.20) my
connection problems are gone.
I think there were several problems co-operating:

1) I used a very old news reader (Forte Free Agent from 2002)
2) I had set it up to log in using my Embarcadero login
3) Free Agent cannot do SSL, which is now required for NNTP access
4) I had not changed the news server settings since a long time so it
was using "forums.codegear.com" rather than "forums.embarcadero.com"
That address was probably changed about 2007 when Codegear was acquired
by Embarcadero...

I am just on my first day of using XN but it feels pretty solid to me
and it is specifically mentioned in the Embarcadero Forum Access
documentation, too. After all it is written in Delphi and uses Indy
socket components...

When I try connecting with XanaNews, all I get is this:

09:30:32:461 TID=4420- Error in thread "Get article list for Embarcadero News Server" - Socket Error # 10013 Access denied.

I've no idea what to do in order to get this straightened out. I'm using SSL and my EDN login credentials (that I also used to log into the web interface to post this).

Suggestions?

tnx.

Another possible reason for the WSAEACCES error is that when the bind function
is called (on Windows NT 4.0 with SP4 and later), another application, service,
or kernel mode driver is bound to the same address with exclusive access.
Such exclusive access is a new feature of Windows NT 4.0 with SP4 and later,
and is implemented by using the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option.

Maybe XanaNews is trying to bind to a local port that is already being used.

I have been using JetBrains Omea Reader for awhile now, and have not had
any problems accessing the Embarcadero forums using my EDN credentials over
SSL.

I suspect it's on the nntp server side of things. My BBS has been pulling a feed for years and that broke some weeks ago. I figured they've changed something on their end. They no longer allow anonymous read-only access on the NNTP server. Jerks. :)

The server cannot generate a 10013 socket error on a client. And besides,
other NNTP clients work just fine with the Embarcadero forurms. The problem
has to be with XanaNews itself.

I am using XanaNews 1.20 and it works also just fine both for reading
and writing (as proofed by this post).
