Hi,

I would like to announce the components Orpheus, Abbrevia, Virtual Tree,
SynEdit, LockBox, Async Professional and PowerPDF for Delphi XE7.

From now the strategy to maintain them has changed. In short words
these are the points:

1. The components only support the latest version of RAD Studio.
2. They support Delphi and CBuilder.
3. They are a fork of their original project.
4. They are hosted as a new project under SourceForge.
5. They are shipped under the same license as their original project.
6. They are sponsored by Embarcadero (Many thanks to Marco Cantù).
7. There will be future bugfixing.
8. You can find more information under my blog (blog.kassebaum.eu).

Thank you for your work.
I have 2 questions about Async Professional :
1) Does it include all the components that where in Version 4 ?
2) Async Professional fax printer driver was not compitible with windows
versions above Windows XP and Window server 2003.
Did you fix or plan to fix that driver ?
Thanks in advance

Hello Roman,
If I remember correctly that version included only 6 components:
- AsyncPro General: TApdComPort, TApdSLController, TApdStatusLight
- AsyncPro Telephony: TApdTapiDevice, TApdTapiStatus, TApdTapiLog
Version 4.06 that I use with Delphi 7 has more then 50 components.
Mybe the Delphi XE2 version at http://www.songbeamer.com/delphi/ included
more components ?

But those are the core serial communication components that most people
bought Async Pro to use.

There are many better packages for the TCP/IP related components, fax and
pagers are rare now, few applications access modems directly (or atall),
they use TAPI, and there are better RAS components (mine).

I still use the GSM SMS component but had to modify it heavily to actually
work, and most GSM access is not TCP/IP, not SMS.

Better to properly support the core functionality than all the obsolete
stuff.

I use Apro fax client and server components.
The use of fax is not obsolete for many Accounting/ERP companies.
Alternative like Black Ice tools are expensive.

the songbeamer version has been created by Sebastian Zierer. I can ask

Hi Roman

I used the songbeamer fork of APro for XE2.

When I moved to XE5 I tried the SourceForge V5 but it was 'missing' the
Packet component which I needed. I tried to add it myself but got lost
somewhere and failed.

So I have used the songbeamer version in XE5 and XE6 and will now be
facing XE7. It is necessary to make quite a few, but simple, changes
to Sebastian's XE2 source to get it to compile (with warnings but no
errors) in later versions of Delphi. For example, the ShortDateFormat
and ShortTimeFormat functions just have to be prefixed with
"FormatSettings." throughout, and stuff like that.

It is a pity the Sourceorge V5 update project stalled, but
understandable. I am not complaining, just making a comment.

That was a long time ago, so let me try to dig that out again... I was working on the Unicode Update of Aync Pro, but a short time before submitting that to sf.net, there was another guy who had started upgrading Asyncpro for Delphi 2009 as a part of an internship and he needed to cut down the project to 5 components. So he rejected my changes. In addition to that, he went in the direction of "ansifying" it (i.e. changing everything to AnsiString even if string is the appropriate type). I didn't have the time to "supervise" this guy as part of my spare time, so I just uploaded my changes to my website. Later the guy who had created LockBox version 3 was working on AsyncPro. I did not really follow up with his changes.
I know that some guys are using my version quite successfully. So what I would've liked to do is to just submit my changes to svn and make that the new version. But that wouldn't have honored the work of the other guys at all, so I didn't want to do that. Also there might be a few fixes in the sf.net version that I don't have.
In my opinion, the best thing is to go with my version and see if the sf.net version has a few fixes that need to be merged into my version. I would've done that if I had enough spare time or somebody who is willing to pay for it.

Since those covered in the that version is also covered in TMS Async
package, those who only need those can translate their work to use that.

I and others who use the unique data packet component on the other side
would like to see your work being in future the main direction of Async
Pro :-)

So I vote for uploading that in cooperation with Roman.

Just a suggestion for all

Why not introduce a new subfolder for each version where the packages for one specific version exists?

Like
'Package\2009
Package\2010
Package\XE and so on?

THen it easier to use in future for XE9 and so on.
Now you need a specific download for each version

No directives needed.

Project | Options | Delphi Compiler | Unit Output Directory

Set to

.\XExx\$(Platform)\$(Config)

Where xx is the current version you are supporting.

Project | Options | Description | Lib Suuffix

Set to

220 (or the current suffix for the release you are currently supporting)

No one is asking that you back support older versions. That is your choice,
what I think we are asking is please don't break older versions when you start
supporting the newest version and stop supporting the current. All that means
is segregating the binaries from each other which should take you less than a
minute to update the project options.

As is GetIt is less that useless when developers handle binaries the way you did
as it breaks all older IDE's by overwriting the DCU's which are version
specific. The new run time bpl will be put in the same path as the old one with
the same name, but earlier in the path so the OS will pick up your XE8 version
in hte path before the XE7 causing issues. They need a suffix like all the
Embarcadero run time bpl's get.

None of that requires ifdef's. I do this with each new release of IBX. I do
not have any ifdef's in the IBX code to handle these issues.

I think you misunderstood my last post.
The problem is that the source code doesn't compile for every Delphi
version. Marco and I, we don't want to introduce directives.

Cool! Thanks for putting time into all of these projects!

Did you download it from the new SourceForge project?

http://sourceforge.net/projects/turbopowerorpheusnew/

The file is named Orpheus10.zip

Apologies if this is a dumb question, but I'm totally new to XE7. How are you supposed to install this? I can open the package files & compile them, but I don't see the BPL's appearing when I go to "Component", "Install Packages"

Hi,

Does the port to Delphi XE7 for Async Pro actually work? I've recompiled the source and installed the package. If then drop a TApdCompPort component into a Win32 VCL form and simply try to compile I get all kind of compile errors in OoMisc.pas, AwUser.pas, etc.

Has this port been tested? If so, are there some project compiler settings I'm missing?

Thanks,
Dean

Yes, it has been tested.
There is another port from Sebastian Zierer and I started to merge both ports but didn't find enough spare time.
If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Roman,

I got it working now, it was operator error. Sorry but it's been a while since in installed a package without a dedicated standalone installer. Had to look up the steps and I realized what I was doing wrong.

Thanks for all the hard work!

Any plans to have Asyncpro include TApdWinsockPort, TApdDataPacket component? I have a program that i still maintain and enhance, that actually use these pretty heavily.

Would love to move from D7 to XE7 on this program.

I see the unit is included, but it doesn't install the component.

+ 1

I use the TApdPacket a lot so I am still using the Songbeamer fork (D
XE7).
As mentioned earlier, I tried and failed to add the component to V5
myself. :(

I already merged Sebastians version with this one but there are still 400 warnings. If I will have some free time I will continue to work on it.

Thank you.

I just installed my version of AsynchPro in XE8, then I thought I would
see if you had any updates..
.. YES.

So I zapped my install and tried the songbeamer GitHub master.zip.
Worked a treat.

Well, I did try following the readme.txt instructions but I hit a snag
with that.
Maybe I did it the wrong way?
As per the readme, I opened and installed the AsyncProDD.dpk - but it
complained that the runtime had not been compiled.

So is there a step missing from the readme (open and compile the
runtime which I did after the above error) or did I use the wrong
procedure?

Sorry, but need to have it compatible to XE2, 2010, 2007 and 2006 (which
is my main platform)

Another suggestion is to move package one step downwards into subfolders

XE7
XE8
XE9 etc.

Otherwise it is doubtful if intention by Turbopower for full access is
fulfilled.

If you can compile it for at least one of them I can create a branch for you.

I don't like this approach because then I have to reintroduce directives.

No you wou7ldn't. Just change the package DCU output. Same should be with the
runtime suffix. What you are doing now breaks the previous release. I
personally don't mind that you decided to not back port fixes, but I should
still have a working XE7 version when I install the XE8 version, but because oyu
have the same runtime bpl name (no suffix) and you over write the XE7 dcu's I no
longer have a working XE7 version.

To fix it (in my case it was the SynEdit stuff) I did exactly what Alf
suggrested, went back to the XE7 release. Added a suffix to the project options
to match XE7 (210) and set the output directory for DCU's to
XE7\$(PLATFORM)\$(CONFIG)

Because your runtime bpl is not suffixed when I installed through GetIt the
packages you are maintaining it broke my older IDE's due to the design time
package in those now attaching to a bpl that is named as expected but has
interface changes which requires the design tiem bpl to be rebuilt.

I know this issue. The problem that the IDE doesn't accept variables for
suffixes. I already sent this issue to Marco.
