Hi,

RE: Update URL works again

I've pushed some minor changes to the "master" branch. Importantly is
that the release/download URL has been updated, and that XanaNews now
queries the Git repository on Github for any new releases.

I've got a few more updates to make then I'll create a new binary release.

ps:
I want to update the information in the "Thank You" tabsheet in the
About dialog. Anybody know the full names of some of the commiters (the
svn conversion to git just brought in user id's). If somebody has a copy
of the origin "contributors.txt" file, that would be great too.

Regards,
Graeme

I don't know what happened to the first upload I made, so I made another
one (.zip file instead of a .7z one). I just downloaded and tested the
zip archive and that executable works fine here. Tested under Windows 7
(64-bit).

What archive did you download? A .7z or .zip one?

I downloaded the zip before you posted that message, and it unzips and runs
fine.

Don't understand why people use 7z, it may compress fractionally better
than zip, but does an 0.5sec difference in download time really justify the
effort in installing 7z, when zip has been part of windows for ever (I
still use WinZip though).

Thanks for keeping XanaNews up to date, I hope you are able to add the
latest OpenSSL binaries.

I have been using the ones from http://opendec.wordpress.com/ and
haven't had a problem...

I use WinRAR and it is just perfect. Supports many file formats. A license is inexpensive and updates/upgrades are free for life.

Yeah, I don't think the issue of the first Xananews release was related
to 7Zip. A rebuild of the Xananews reduced the executable size from 8MB
down to 4MB. So something odd seems to have happened to the build process.

Since the fractions are big, it all adds up, when working with big
files.

I almost only use 7zip now.

Graeme: I originally downloaded the .7z file. I have now downloaded the
.zip file and that works fine. Thanks

Hi Graeme, thank you for XanaNews release on github.
Do you have plans to make it crossplatform at least on Linux or is there "mutt is perfect 4 everybody" rule?
Is it easy enough to compile binary form the source by hand?

Yes, I plan to make it available on Linux and FreeBSD. But first I'm
just getting familiar with the code and will slowly replace 3rd party
components with standard ones or alternatives, or make them switchable
at compile time. That should then ease up the porting when I get to it.

Transfer XanaNews to another PC

I currently have XanaNews running on an XP machine. I would like to
install it on a Windows 7 machine together with my subscribed groups
and messages.

I can see that the XP groups and messages are stored in C:\Documents
and Settings\Paul Richards.HP_LAPTOP\Local Settings\Application
Data\Woozle\XanaNews

I presumably have to install XanaNews on my Win 7 machine. Can I just
copy the Woozle\XanaNews folder contents over to Win 7 and, if so, into
which location? Are there any other actions I need to take?

Thanks

John: There isn't a 'Documents and Settings\<machine name>\Local
Settings\Application Data\' folder in Win 7.

I'm assuming it has to go in 'C:\Users\Paul\...' but after that I'm not
sure.

"Documents and Settings" is one of those newfangled "virtual" or "link" folders.
The (more or less) "real" path is C:\Users\<your name>\AppData\Local\Woozle\XanaNews\.
On my machine, anyway. Been there for almost 4 years now.
