"New in 10.1 Berlin!
The VCL and FireMonkey Designers can be separated from the code editor window,
making it possible to have the designer on one monitor, while coding on another monitor, and to work on
multiple forms at the same time"
ROTFL - which was the way it always worked since Delphi 1 until someone decided that apeing VS was the way to go... despite someone telling that while working with multiple monitors and multiple forms it was a stupid change...

That brings back the possibility of migrating our primary application
to iOS/Android again... just have to nut out the ARC changes now.

No way. The winner might choose some other name. I want Bottrop.

No way. Some German city nearly nobody even in Germany knows about will
not be 10.2. Germany now had his turn.
But hey: if the money from the aution is bound to be used for R&D (in
addition to the regular R&D budget) then why not have such an auction?

Fairly sure. Unless that was an original codename that was later renamed
to Godzilla.

It was going to be named London originally, but was renamed (why? who knows)
to Berlin. But AFAIK London was never made public, while BigBen was. This
time around, Tokyo and Godzilla have been stated publicly, so I doubt they
will be changed.

Scary, innit? I mean, they did not come all at once, i.e. it was not a
convoy of some sorts. First one, a few minutes later another one, then
a while nothing, than another one, etc.
As if they knew where we were going and one of them had to switch on
the lights first while the others were just guarding our progress. <g>

No, mostly just for you. You could easily find that out by making a poll
here. But since you fear the outcome you won't do that. You'll rather
"spam" these groups and this discussion particular with requesting a
product name nobody except you wants.
I don't think this is good style from a Team B member, even if the
product name is a mostly non technical topic.

Stupid thing is that 10.1 is now ambigious between 10 update 1 and 10.1.
Is update 1 now a minor version ?
There is no limit to how stupid a PHB can be. They just ooze bad ideas.

Khmmm... Let's name it XE11 and everybody (except maybe one or two
outliers) will be happy.
As someone else posted, the new migration app calls 10.1 Berlin "XE10"
(probably a wildcard because the real name was not known yet, when it
was written) and Delphi 10 Seattle well, "Delphi 10 Seattle".
So from now on, anyone using XE10 is causing big confusion: do they
mean Berlin or Seattle?
So I think people should slowly wake up and realize that "nicknames"
like XE9, XE10 and XE11, which are not based on real names, are
confusing and simply use the real names instead.

I can understand how many people might not grok that XE9, etc., aren't

XE8 is a real name. As is XE9, XE10, XE10.1, XE10.2 all the way to XEwhatever-the-hell-number-I-want to-call-it. Today, what XE>8 is not, is an official name. But unofficially anyone can call it whatever they want. No one is obligated to respond to questions or posts regarding XE10.1 if they can't ascertain what XE10.1 means. Just as no one is obligated to call the latest iteration of the product by it's official name. As long as 2 people understand what they mean when they talk about it, that's all that matters.
Anyone who concerns themselves with an unofficial name for a product and attempts to convince a majority of others of the necessity of only using the official name has, in my opinion, a serious complex. And from what I've read recently, it's really only one person (guess) who has an issue. As if using an unofficial name will, in fact, finally kill Delphi. The majority appear to have no issue with the unofficial naming convention. And it's not even as if the unofficial naming convention is unreasonable either.
XE10.1 is a great mystery, but 10.1 is not.

Not too sure what to call the new incarnation, much legacy stuff

XE10B maybe (B for Berlin) ?
Or maybe it is time to move to Dnnn where nnn is the compiler version.

The latter one would be the most sensible thing to do anyway, even in
the marketing used name. By doing so they even could skip a few numbers!

I thought that for now everybody could learn that there is no XE10 so
for shorter version string could be D10.1B.
D10B would not be enough future proof. The first version next year
could be Delphi 10.3 Beograd .
XE has been removed so forget it!

Nobody besides you wants that name.
So it wouldn't be a good choice marketing wise (from EMBT's side - I
don't care about Bottrop's city marketing)

Who cares about Bottrop? I vote for Balashikha ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balashikha), at least it is larger and more known here in Moscow. Unlike Bottrop or Seattle known to nobody.

Nobody cares whether you've been first or last, except you.
Better use what you have at hand, namely 10.1 Berlin, and write some
software. You could name that software you write "Bottrop" then, as
that's your decission.

Ok, fine with me.
I disagree. From now on, the future Delphi versions must be named according to this schema:
(fixed part) Delphi 10.1 B(variable part - city name, must start with B)
For example:
Delphi 10.1 Berlin
Delphi 10.1 Bottrop (well...)
Delphi 10.1 Baku
Delphi 10.1 Bombay
Delphi 10.1 Blagoveshchensk
Delphi 10.1 Bucharest
etc
Seems logical for me, I'm just taking the stupidity to the next level...

As everybody knows, the cake is a lie anyway. Luckily I am very far from Bottrop, and to find somebody in a 15-million city is not a trivial task I still think that the 10.1+"B-city" naming schema is a very good choice for all the future versions. Just imagine: XE15, aka 10.1 Benrath!

Ge,

Rudy,
| | But, but, but, RAD Studio XE8 was a "real name," wasn't it?
|
| XE8 yes, but not XE9, XE10, XE10.1 or XE11 or anything XEn beyond XE8.
I can understand how many people might not grok that XE9, etc., aren't
real names. It seems more than a tad STUPID to me that they aren't
used as "real" names since XE8 is a real name! <shaking head>

You can call it whatever you like, but you are confusing your readers, especially now XE10 had been used for DIFFERENT versions.
If you want to confuse your readers, that is up to you, but I find it kind of rude.

There should be an online poll for the name, so something like "Boaty McBoatFace" could win. If that's what the public wants for a $300 million ship, the Delphi community can surely come up with a better name.

Los Angelos
Chicago
Dallas
St. Paul
Toronto
Montreal
Vancouver
Calgary
Osaka
Nagoya
Sapporo
Beijing
Shanghai
Nanjing
Hong Kong
Singapore
Jakarta
Hamburg
Cologne
Frankfurt
....etc...
And I haven't even mentioned South America, Australia, Africa, etc..

Well, because they didn't make 10.1 Bottrop.
Ahnd? The didn't make 10.1 Stuttgart either.
With that reasoning Rudy everybody can name his or her favourite city.
I'm still convinced, regarding especially this conversation, that
dropping the city name would be the best solution.
And no, namig it Bottrop would even be a worse solution.

They should make it configurable in an ini file so people could put their favorite city name in there, and it would should up everywhere in the app

I still do not get all this naming nonsence. Why couldn't those who invented this <censored> just take the IKEA catalog and pull names from it if they insisted on ruining the versioning anyway? Delphi Faktum, Delphi Rimforsa, Delphi Ledda...

21st century should make things easier. But now we have it: Berlin is
not a product, but a version name.
So yes, the product already had a name and the product already has a
version even if marketing is not using that one. But that just means
that there was no real need to use something else as all really
necessary parts already existed. Adding more to it is just justifying
marketing department. But the time for choosing a new naming sheme would
be better used for other things in my eyes.

Software versioning is the process of assigning either unique version
names or unique version numbers to unique states of computer software.
One could simplify that by calling them "unique identifiers." Then they could simply assign a GUID to each new version and either create memory tests (which I would fail) or cause a spate of new software identifying the identifiers. Marketers, here's an opportunity!

That's the marketing opportunity - a utility that translates the GUID into "version Bottrop" or whatever the user likes.

What on earth is complex about a *name*? They are much easier to
remember than numbers, for most people. A unique name is much more
mnemonic than a unique number.
As I have said before, most people know they have OS X El Capitan, but
don't know, nor care about the particular version number that it has.
Or what about Windows Vista or Windows XP? Do you know, without
looking, which version numbers they had?
Do you know which version number Ubuntu Vivid Vervet or Precise
Pangolin have?

I don't know them because I don't care. No one says "I have this
problem on Windows 6.0: how do I open the whachamacallit?", they ask
how to open it on Windows Vista.
No one asks "how do I set an editor font in OS X 10.11?", they ask how
to do that in OS X El Capitan.
People prefer names. That's a fact. Only nitpickers prefer easy to
forget, look-alike version numbers over proper, much easier to
distinguish names. And marketing knows this. You, apparently, don't
know it yet.

People prefer names. That's a fact. Only nitpickers prefer easy to
forget, look-alike version numbers over proper, much easier to
distinguish names. And marketing knows this. You, apparently, don't
know it yet.
I know them because afaik I once used them in some batch file
And I'm sure that is also why some others know them. You're geeks.

I've only met one live pangolin, in Botswana. I petted it and rubbed my head on it for good luck. I didn't try to determine its sex.

Or what about Windows Vista or Windows XP? Do you know, without
looking, which version numbers they had?
At a blink. XP is 5.1, Vista is 6.0. That is what I check in code.

Have no idea. These are funny aliases to real version numbers. My primary operating system is Mint 17.3 which is based on Ubuntu 14.04.

I don't. My code doesn't care. Most people don't care. It is clear that
you guys are geeks, and have no clue about marketing. <g>

And sometimes marketers don't have a clue about marketing. At
Gulfstream Aerospace, they have a Gulfstream 500, which is a short
range version of the 550. Then a year or so ago they announced two new
models, one of which is called the Gulfstream 500, and bears no parts
or resemblence to the existing 500. Now they have two different
products with the same name!

Was Berlin released before or after Seattle?
Unless they had choosen a unique alphabetic sequence:
Ankara
Berlin
Chicago
Dublin
etc.
Then they could choose a new naming scheme after 26 releases.

No. Talking about Ankara (esp. in Germany currently) and Berlin is more
common so the names are more common as well and sicne they want to gain
biggest possible audience more common names are being picked.

That man is from Istanbul (and proud of it), not from Ankara. So yes,
Amsterdam is correct.

But the capital is Ankara with the seat of government and not Istambul.

You don't get it that products have names? Oh kaye.
The product already has a name: Delphi or C++ Builder or RAD Studio.
That's a name. So no real need to add any city name and especially no
need to use Bottrop, a city nobody outside Germany will know and few
Germans will have been there even. Then better use Schwäbisch Hall and
try to get some sponsoring of that particular company with the same name
located there for using the name. Or will Bottrop sponsor the use of its
name? Don't think so.
Greetings

Seattle, Berlin or Bottrop are names indicating the respective
versions. <shrug>

This caught my eye in the feature matrix.
New in 10.1 Berlin! [Weak] and [Unsafe] support for interface references for the Windows and OSX Delphi
compilers
Thats awesome.
