Hey. I have a bunch of links saved (in a TXT file). Like:
ms-help://embarcadero.rs_xe7/rad/FireMonkey_Components_Guide.html

I believe I used to be able to look at them simply by pasting them into the address bar of IE. I know I used to be able to view them SOMEhow.

Now, it seems I can't do anything with them!

Why not??

Many Thanks.

Are you still using XE7, or have you since upgraded to XE8 or Seattle? In
XE8, Embarcadero dropped DExplorer for its documentation and went back to
HTMLHelp.

Good call. I must've added those "addresses" while using XE7. I'm now using XE8.1.

However:

Although, based on the above. And the fact that while an old link might still be good
such as http://docwiki.embarcadero.com/RADStudio/XE7/en/Conditional_compilation_%28Delphi%29
maybe ALL the old links (that aren't "ms-help://") should still be good? Regardless of the version?
which is XE7, if I want something newer I should search the docwiki again. which will yield
http://docwiki.embarcadero.com/RADStudio/Seattle/en/Conditional_compilation_%28Delphi%29 which is Seattle.

So... Working with XE8...

If I search for "conditional compilation XE8" I don't get either of the above.

Which makes the online help system a bit - um - off, does it not?

Also, many times when searching for offline help, the IDE gets "locked into" a specific CHM (Fmx for example) and further searches won't show the "intermediate" dialog that asks which <whatever> you're looking for (e.g. Fmx or Vcl or System). Which is a bit - um - off also. Is it not?

Is this the best I can do (and am I doing it right) as far as the online AND the offline help systems?

How much better (worse, different) is it when I jump to Seattle?

Thanks.

That is a link to an external website. That is good regardless of version.

If they are HTTP links, yes. "ms-help://" links only apply to DExplorer
running on the local machine, they are not links to an external server.

The XE8 version of the link is:

http://docwiki.embarcadero.com/RADStudio/XE8/en/Conditional_compilation_%28Delphi%29

Notice that "/Seattle" has been replaced with /XE8".

The version-neutral link is:

http://docwiki.embarcadero.com/RADStudio/en/Conditional_compilation_%28Delphi%29

Notice that "/Seattle" has been removed.

Remy, Are you suggested that for most (all?) of these "version specific" links that there will ALSO be a version-neutral one?

Thanks.

When a version-neutral URL is requested, the DocWiki server redirects the
browser to the latest version-specific page. In this case:

http://docwiki.embarcadero.com/RADStudio/en/Conditional_compilation_%28Delphi%29

Redirects to:

http://docwiki.embarcadero.com/RADStudio/Seattle/en/Conditional_compilation_%28Delphi%29

So use the version-neutral URLs in your saved links. If you need to get
to a version-specific page of an earlier version, you can use the DocWiki's
"Previous Versions" section for that, or substitute the URL manually in the
browser's address bar.
